Canary Wharf CBT Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Service

CBT is a framework of psychotherapies whose fundamental principles are a concern with the thoughts and feelings that are important in all psychiatric and psychological disorders and the adoptions of methods of treatment scientifically based and measurable in scientific trials

What is it for?

Cognitive approaches came to the attention of most clinicians in the management of depressive disorders.

However, CBT has much wider applications, many of which  relate to conditions which often cannot be treated easily and effectively in other ways. These include:

 Panic attacks

 Obsessive disorders

 Eating disorders (Bulimia, Anorexia)

 Somatic problems

 Sexual and marital problems

More recently CBT has been proven to be effective within a much wider range of issues such as:

Excessive worry, called also generalized anxiety

 Social and interpersonal anxiety

 Sleep problems

 Stress and stress management

 Post traumatic stress

 Low self esteem

 Lack of assertiveness

 Anger management

 Fear of conflict

 Fear of making decisions

 Addictions (eg.Gambling/Pornography)

 Substances abuse

and it is becoming the framework of choice by new forms of therapy and tendencies such as executive coaching, sport coaching,  motivational coaching, life-style coaching and many others.

How does it work and how is it done?

CBT therapy starts with a Cognitive-Behavioural assessment

during which the therapist and the client in a collaborative relationship agree on a formulation of:

 the target problems

 the history of the problem

 the factors maintaining the problem

an hypothesis of the problem causes or purpose

an intervention plan to rectify the problem

The central principle of a CBT assessment is that our behaviour is determined by the immediate situations and how we interprete them. This therefore is the major focus of an assessment, with an emphasis on specific problems rather than global entities.

Another fundamental priciple of CBT is that the client needs to feel safe to disclose important and often distressing information. Your Therapist therefore will endevour to foster a warm and trusting athmosphere, will not judge you and will be empatic and committed to helping you overcome the current difficulties.
